1. A base station comprising:
a transceiver; and
a processor operationally coupled to the transceiver;
wherein the processor is configured to:
receive, via the transceiver, channel state information (CSI) feedback that includes any one or a combination of a channel quality indicator (CQI) and a rank of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel; and
transmit, via the transceiver, a MIMO transmission using a number of transmission antennas based on the CSI feedback, wherein the number of transmission antennas is based on the rank and an adaptive coding and modulation type for the transmission selected is based on the CQI.
