1. A rechargeable battery cell, comprising:
at least one positive electrode comprising a compound in the form of a layered oxide as an active material, wherein the layered oxide comprises a face-centered cubic lattice having oxygen atoms at the lattice positions and metal ions in the octahedral holes;
at least one negative electrode;
a housing;
an SO2 based electrolyte having at least one first conducting salt which has the formula (I):

M is a metal selected from the group consisting of alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, metals of group 12 of the periodic table of the elements, and aluminum;
x is an integer from 1 to 3;
R1, R2, R3 and R4 are selected independently of one another from the group consisting of substituted or unsubstituted C1-C10 alkyl, C2-C10 alkenyl, C2-C10 alkynyl, C3-C10 cycloalkyl, C6-C14 aryl and C5-C14 heteroaryl; and
Z is aluminum or boron.
