1. A hydrographic sonar system comprising:
a multibeam sonar transceiver including a transmitter and a receiver;
the transceiver for use with one projector array and one hydrophone array where the arrays are not arranged in plural rows and plural columns;
the projector array forms one transmit beam that results from a single broadband waveform that excites all frequencies within the frequency band;
the transmit beam being an elongated transmit beam that simultaneously ensonifies an entire swath;
the hydrophone array forms multiple receive beams that intersect the transmit beam, sonar data being acquired at the intersections;
the sonar data, or information derived from the sonar data, processed to recognize signals at selected frequencies; and,
bottom segmentation or characterization indicated by the processed data.
