1. A pipe loosening device, comprising:
a rigid deforming die, including:
a leading end body portion, having a first lateral dimension sized to fit closely within an inner diameter of a pipe to be replaced;
a trailing end body portion, having a second lateral dimension substantially matching the first lateral dimension, wherein a trailing end axis is substantially aligned with a leading end axis;
a protrusion located between the leading end body portion and the trailing end body portion, wherein the protrusion extends from the leading end body portion and the trailing end body portion by a distance between 5 and 10 percent of the first lateral dimension; and
a threaded connection on the leading end body portion that is adapted to couple to a directional drill rod section.
