1. A method for measuring a circumference of an anatomical structure, comprising:
providing a handheld ultrasound probe for generating ultrasound images of the anatomical structure and providing a touchscreen display, being coupled to the handheld ultrasound probe for receiving ultrasound images from the handheld ultrasound probe for display, the touchscreen display having pixels for rendering a visible image of the ultrasound images from the handheld ultrasound probe,
generating with the handheld ultrasound probe an ultrasound image that includes an image of the anatomical structure,
displaying the ultrasound image that includes the image of the anatomical structure on the touchscreen display,
providing a movable measurement tool having
an ellipse with a major axis and a minor axis and a circumference and a visible representations of the major axis and a visible representation of the minor axis and a visible representation of a the circumference of the ellipse, displayed on the touchscreen display, and
a first icon that maintains a fixed distance from the visible representations of the major axis and a second icon that maintains a fixed distance from the visible representations of the minor axis,
allowing a user to drag the first icon across the touchscreen display and to drag the second icon across the touchscreen display to arrange the visible representations of the major axis to correspond to a length of the anatomical structure and the minor axis to correspond to a width of the anatomical structure displayed and to superimpose the circumference of the ellipse over the circumference of the anatomical structure while having the first icon spaced away by the fixed distance from the visible representation of the major axis of the ellipse and the second icon spaced away by the fixed distance from the visible representation of the minor axis of the ellipse, and
determining a spatial length of the circumference of the ellipse by determining a number of the pixels used to display the circumference of the ellipse.
