1. A method comprising:
determining, by a first network device in a network, inactivity of a central network device responsible for distributing routing information among a plurality of network devices, including the first network device, in the network, wherein the central network device is a virtually aggregated network switch formed by linking a plurality of network devices;
delaying, by the first network device, network route calculations until a second network device is elected from the plurality of network devices, to perform functions of the central network device;
receiving, by the first network device from the second network device, link state information comprising routing information associated with the plurality of network devices, wherein the link state information is used by the plurality of network devices in determining shortest network paths in the network;
in response to receiving the link state information, determining, by the first network device, that the second network device is elected to perform the functions of the central network device; and
resuming, by the first network device, the route calculations based on the link state information received from the second network device.
