OG exemplary drawing

1. A rechargeable electrochemical battery cell, comprising:
a housing;
a positive electrode;
a negative electrode; and
an electrolyte containing SO2 and a conductive salt of the active metal of the cell, wherein the electrolyte contains at least 1.5 mol SO2 per mol conducting salt;
wherein the electrolyte is based on SO2 and the mobility of the ions of the conducting salt is at least partially guaranteed by SO2;
wherein at least one of the electrodes contains a binder comprising a polymer based on monomeric styrene or butadiene structural units; and
wherein the binder is present in an amount effective to reduce capacity loss and no more than 8 wt %.
