1. A method comprising:
controlling a write element on a HAMR device to write data to adjacent data bits on a magnetic storage media on a first pass over a data track; and
controlling the write element to create a region of neutral polarity at a boundary between the adjacent data bits, the region of neutral polarity having a size that is less than a width of a data bit.
