1. A method comprising:
obtaining a blank fiber;
irradiating at least one local volume of the blank fiber to induce an end-to-end birefringence in the blank fiber;
automatically adjusting the blank fiber or the irradiating of the at least one local volume of the blank fiber based on the end-to-end birefringence induced in the blank fiber; and
based on the end-to-end birefringence induced in the blank fiber, producing a polarization-maintaining fiber.
