1. A remote insect detector, comprising:
a pitfall trap adapted to trap a target insect within;
an insect funnel passage located below the pitfall trap and dimensioned to retain the target insect in a detecting position; and
an optical beam detection circuit operable to detect the target insect in the detecting position and to generate a detection signal.
