1. A surgical instrument, comprising:
an end effector mounted on an elongate shaft, the end effector defining a tissue passage configured to separate and receive a length of tissue, the tissue passage having a predefined and static shape; and
a cutting element,
wherein the end effector is pivotally mounted to the elongate shaft such that the end effector is configured to be rotatably manipulated during a procedure between a first position and a second position;
wherein the tissue passage defines a longitudinal axis that is substantially parallel to the elongate shaft in both the first position and the second position; and
wherein a first terminal end of the end effector is selectively positionable to be one of a leading end and a trailing end, wherein the leading end is distal a distal end of the elongate shaft and the trailing end is proximal the distal end of the elongate shaft.
