1. A first transceiver for an optical communication network, comprising:
a transmitting portion configured to transmit, to a second transceiver disposed remotely from the first transceiver over an optical communication medium, a modulated downstream signal on a first coherent tone;
a receiving portion configured to receive, from the second transceiver over the optical communication medium, a modulated upstream signal on a second coherent tone different from the first coherent tone;
wherein the second coherent tone is phase-synchronized with the first coherent tone such that a center frequency of the second coherent tone is held constant to a center frequency of the first coherent tone.
