1. A method comprising:
obtaining a reconstructed 2D point from a first 2D point obtained by projecting a 3D point of a point cloud onto a projection plane;
determining an interpolation coding mode based on a rate-distortion cost associated with at least one candidate interpolation coding mode, the at least one candidate interpolation coding mode defining a neighborhood around the reconstructed 2D point and a minimum depth value that provide for reconstructing at least one 2D interpolation point based on the reconstructed 2D point, the at least one 2D interpolation point approximating at least one other 2D point of the point cloud, wherein at least two interpolation coding modes are determined by different values of the minimum depth value,
encoding the determined interpolation coding mode.
