1. A method for authenticating the performance of operations on cells on an instrument comprising the steps of:
providing a network of data storage locations including at least one instrument for growing and maintaining cells from a cell culture;
imaging the cells and producing a first set of data relating thereto, the first set of data comprising at least one of images and information derived from the images;
maintaining a distributed database in at least a plurality of locations;
storing the first set of data in the distributed database;
growing and maintaining other cells with at least one other instrument to reproduce the data from the at least one instrument after the first set of data was produced;
imaging the other cells and producing a second set of data comprising at least one of images and information derived from the images;
authenticating the first set of data in the distributed database with the second set of data; and
providing at least one token to the at least one other instrument.
