1. An insert for a surgical stapler, the insert comprising:
a body configured to fit within a bore of a shell assembly, the body defining a proximal-most edge; and
a spline cover located at the proximal-most edge of the body and extending inward from the body, the spline cover sized and dimensioned to cap a distal portion of a spline of the shell assembly.
