1. A surgical device, comprising:
an end effector including first and second jaws configured to engage tissue between the first and second jaws with the end effector in a closed position;
a staple cartridge configured to be removably seated in the end effector; and
an I-beam configured to, with the staple cartridge removably seated in the end effector, engage the first and second jaws and translate along the end effector relative to the first and second jaws, wherein a size of the I-beam is defined by the staple cartridge removably seated in the end effector;
wherein the staple cartridge and the I-beam are configured such that upon removal of the staple cartridge from the end effector, a portion of the I-beam is removed from the end effector, and a remainder of the I-beam remains in the end effector.
