1. A multivariate optical computing sensor comprising:
a first multivariate optical element calibrated to independently measure an electromagnetic spectral pattern of a first cultivation characteristic of a single algae strain in a cultivating algae water slurry; and
a detector for receiving modified electromagnetic radiation from the first multivariate optical element and generating an output signal indicative of the first cultivation characteristic, wherein the first cultivation characteristic is total organic carbon, total carbohydrate, or fatty acid methyl esters.
