a processor;
a power device; and
a driver electrically connected to the power device in series;
wherein the brake control unit provides an output signal to a brake line,
wherein the output signal represents at least one of a first signal provided by the power device, a second signal provided by the driver, and a third signal provided by a combination of the power device and the driver,
wherein the first, second, and third signal may be related to an operating condition of an electrical system of the towed vehicle, towing vehicle and brake control unit,
wherein the processor receives feedback from at least one of the power device or driver to identify a short or fault and location of the short or fault, the processor operatively transmits at least one test signal to at least one of the power device or the driver, and wherein the test signal comprises a first step function representative of a drive signal processed by the power device and a second step function representative of a drive signal processed by the driver.
