1. A method of generating lineage-specific cells from primate embryonic stem cells, the method comprising:
(a) culturing the primate embryonic stem cells in a protein carrier-free culture medium comprising basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and at least one factor selected from the group consisting of: transforming growth factor beta-3 (TGFβ3) isoform, transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGFβ1) isoform and IL6RIL6 chimera, wherein said IL6RIL6 chimera comprises amino acids 112-355 of SEQ ID NO: 32,
to thereby obtain expanded, undifferentiated embryonic stem cells;
(b) subjecting said expanded, undifferentiated primate embryonic stem cells to culturing conditions suitable for differentiating and/or expanding lineage specific cells;
thereby generating the lineage-specific cells from the primate embryonic stem cells.
