1. An apparatus comprising:
a hydrogel including: (a) (i) an upper surface having a width and a length, (a) (ii) a lower surface having a width and a length, (a) (iii) sidewalls that respectively couple the widths and lengths of the upper and lower surfaces to each other;
first, second, third, and fourth segments of non-viable extracellular matrix;
wherein (b) (i) a portion of each of the first and second segments emerges from the upper surface of the hydrogel and a portion of each of the third and fourth segments emerges from the lower surface of the hydrogel, (b) (ii) an additional portion of each of the first, second, third, and fourth segments is submerged within the hydrogel and between the upper and lower surfaces of the hydrogel;
wherein no portion of the first or second segments emerges from the lower surface of the hydrogel and no portion of the third or fourth segments emerges from the upper surface of the hydrogel;
wherein the hydrogel includes hyaluronic acid and alginate.
