1. A system for detecting the presence of an analyte in a sample, comprising (a) a recombinant Escherichia coli (E. coli) expressing one or more identical or different recombinant proteins on the surface thereof, wherein at least one of the recombinant proteins specifically binds to the analyte directly or through a binding agent that specifically binds to said recombinant protein and the analyte, and (b) a signal-producing substance that can be detected, and wherein the system is a diagnostic kit.
