A method for producing a lead chalcogenide nanocrystal, the method comprising contacting a lead (IV) containing compound with an organic acid and a chalcogen-containing reagent, wherein the lead (IV) containing compound is contacted with the organic acid to produce a lead salt and the lead salt is then contacted with the chalcogen-containing reagent.
