1. A method for detecting seatbelt positioning, comprising:
capturing, by a camera, a near infrared (NIR) image of an occupant;
determining, using the NIR image, an angle of the seatbelt;
converting the NIR image to a black-and-white image;
scanning across the black-and-white image to detect a detection point having a plurality of transitions between black and white segments corresponding to stripes extending lengthwise along a length of the seatbelt;
determining a measured width between two of the transitions of the detection point;
determining a compensated width based on the measured width and the angle of the seatbelt; and
determining, based on the compensated width and a known width of the seatbelt, a distance between the camera and the seatbelt at the detection point.
