1. A system for optimizing a fixation of a tissue sample having a first tissue type, the system comprising:
(a) an acoustic device, wherein the acoustic device comprises one or more transmitters, wherein the one or more transmitters are configured to emit ultrasonic waves at an intensity of less than 1 W/cm2, and one or more receivers configured to detect the ultrasonic waves emitted by the one or more transmitters; and
(b) a computing device communicatively coupled to the acoustic monitoring device, where the computing device comprises (i) one or more processors, and (ii) one or more memories coupled to the one or more processors, the one or more memories storing computer-executable instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the system to perform operations comprising:
(a) monitoring a diffusion of a fluid at one or more temperatures through the tissue sample having the first tissue type using the acoustic device, wherein the monitoring of the diffusion of the fluid comprises repeatedly measuring in real-time a time-of-flight of the emitted ultrasonic waves that have traveled through the tissue sample having the first tissue type while the tissue sample having the first tissue type is immersed within the fluid; and
(b) determining a time when the fluid has diffused through at least a predetermined portion of the tissue sample having the first tissue type based on the monitoring of the diffusion of the fluid at the one or more temperatures through the tissue sample having the first tissue type.
