1. An Escherichia coli bacterium for making aryl sulfates, comprising a heterologous polypeptide having aryl sulfotransferase activity; wherein the bacterium has been modified to have an increased protein expression of an ATP sulfurylase, an APS kinase, and a PAP phosphatase compared to an identical bacterium that does not carry said modification;
wherein the polypeptide having aryl sulfotransferase activity comprises an amino acid sequence which has at least 95% sequence identity to the amino acid sequence set forth in any one of SEQ ID NOs: 1 to 13;
wherein the ATP sulfurylase comprises i) a polypeptide comprising an amino acid
sequence which has at least 95% sequence identity with the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 25, and ii) a polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence which has at least 95% sequence identity with the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 26;
wherein the APS kinase comprises an amino acid sequence which has at least 95% sequence identity with the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 27; and
wherein the PAP phosphatase comprises an amino acid sequence which has at least 95% sequence identity with the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 28.
