An absorbent for the liquid phase desulfurization of a sulfur-containing hydrocarbon feedstock wherein the absorbent is an alloyed nanowire absorbent comprising zinc oxide and catalytically-active metal particle, wherein all the catalytically-active metal particles are located within and not on the surface of, the nanowire.
