1. A method of performing a package status check, comprising:
detecting a sponge identifier associated with each of a plurality of surgical sponges in a package;
performing a consistency check for a package using a predetermined quantity associated with the package,
issuing an alert when a number of detected sponge identifiers associated does not match the predetermined quantity associated with the package;
overriding the alert; and
tracking an identity of a person who causes the alert to be overridden.
