1. A switch, comprising:
a communication logic block to receive an incoming packet flow, wherein the packet flow corresponds to a set of data flow packets with one or more common header fields and is identified by an incoming flow identifier that is unique within an input port via which the packet flow is received;
a tracer packet logic block to:
determine that a trace bit in the data flow packet header is set and that the data flow packet length exceeds a threshold, and
in response to the determination, add trace data to a data flow packet in the set of data flow packets, the data flow packet including a packet payload comprising application data; and
a forwarding logic block to forward each data flow packet including the trace data towards a destination device via a network fabric, wherein the network fabric includes a plurality of switches.
