1. A process for preparing a sulfur copolymer, the process comprising:
copolymerizing a cyclic monothiocarbonate compound of formula

wherein
R1 and R2 are independently of one another hydrogen, C1-C18-alkyl, C1-C18-alkyl substituted with halogen or interrupted with O or S; C6-C18-aryl or C6-C12-aryl substituted with C1-C4-alkyl, C1-C4-alkoxy, C1-C4-alkylthio, or halogen;
with elemental sulfur in the presence of a polymerization initiator.
