1. A method of measuring the rotation speed of a rotating object, comprising:
emitting a plurality of optical pulses toward the rotating object;
reflecting certain ones of the optical pulses from one or more of a plurality of elements of said rotating object;
detecting a time-of-flight of the reflected optical pulses; and
deriving the rotational speed from the detected time-of flight.
