1. A method comprising:
identifying a plurality of combinations of antennas based on a plurality of available antennas for a wireless communications device, wherein the plurality of available of antennas numbers more than two;
generating, using a processing device included in a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) device, a plurality of quality metrics comprising at least one quality metric for each of the identified combinations of antennas, wherein each of the at least one quality metrics represents a signal quality of a signal associated with each of the plurality of antennas, wherein the signal is a spatial stream, and wherein the generating is responsive to determining a number of multiplexed data streams included in the spatial stream is greater than one; and
selecting, using the processing device, at least two antennas of the wireless communications device based, at least in part, on a similarity between values of a quality metric for each of the at least two antennas, wherein the at least two antennas that are selected have the closest values of quality metrics, and wherein the at least two antennas are selected for use by the wireless communications device during a transmitting or receiving operation.
