1. A method for treatment of a fungal infection consisting of administering to a subject in need thereof a pharmaceutical formulation consisting of an antifungal agent of Glucono δ-lactone (formula (III)

alone or in combination with gluconic acid, glucono-γ-lactone, or both, and one or more pharmaceutically acceptable excipients; and
treating said fungal infection in said subject by said administering.
