1. A method for generating a domain topology for a system, the method comprising:
accessing a functional model database;
identifying, in a computing resource database, a first configuration of components matching a first functional model in the functional model database, the first functional model representing a manifest used to create a first virtual machine configured to serve a function, wherein the first virtual machine uses the first configuration of components and the first configuration of components is identified using device scanning software that tracks devices and software executing within the system;
generating a first domain for the first configuration of components, in the domain topology, wherein the domain topology comprises a second domain for a second configuration of components matching a second functional model;
generating a graphical hierarchy of the domain topology and providing the graphical hierarchy to a user via a visual display device, wherein the graphical hierarchy shows a connection between the first domain and the second domain;
after generating the graphical hierarchy:
identifying, in the computing resource database, a third configuration of components matching the first functional model;
generating a third domain for the third configuration of components, in the domain topology;
generating a superset domain, wherein the superset domain aggregates the first domain and the third domain together; and
generating a new graphical hierarchy of the domain topology and providing the new graphical hierarchy to the user via the visual display device, wherein the graphical hierarchy shows a connection between the superset domain and the second domain.
