1. A non-transitory, computer readable media having stored thereon instructions wherein the instructions, when executed by a processing device of a controlling device, cause the controlling device to:
perform an auto-discovery function to obtain from a first target appliance coupled to the controlling device via a local area network at least a type for and a brand of the first target appliance;
present to a user an indication of the at least a type for and the brand of the first target appliance;
receive a first verbal confirmation from the user that the at least a type for and the brand of the first target appliance is correct;
echo back to the user the first verbal confirmation received from the user;
when the first verbal confirmation indicates that the at least a type for and the brand of the first target appliance is correct, select a one of a plurality of command code sets, present to the user a request to test one or more commands selected from the one of the plurality of command code sets, receive a second verbal confirmation from the user that the test command was successfully received by the first target appliance, echo back to the user the second verbal confirmation received from the user, and, when the second verbal confirmation indicates that the test command was successfully received by the first target appliance, use the one of the plurality of command code sets when the controlling device placed into an operational mode used to control the first target appliance.
