1. A system comprising:
a data storage housing;
a plurality of hard drives positioned within the data storage housing in a rectangular grid pattern, the plurality of hard drives comprising pairs of hard drives with the pairs of hard drives spaced apart from one another to provide a plurality of airflow channels; and
a plurality of fan devices positioned within the data storage housing, with each of the fan devices having a fan module and with each of the pairs of the hard drives having one of the fan modules positioned between the two hard drives of the pair of hard drives;
wherein each of the fan devices is configured to intake air from one of the airflow channels along an intake direction, redirect the air using an inlet air deflector onto a fan airflow direction through the fan module of the fan device, and further redirect the air using an outlet air deflector onto an output direction into another of the airflow channels, with the fan airflow direction perpendicular to both the intake direction and the output direction, and with the inlet air deflector mounted on one side of a corresponding pair of the hard drives and the outlet air deflector mounted on an opposing side of the corresponding pair of the hard drives;
wherein each of the fan devices is configured so the inlet air deflector and the outlet air deflector of the fan device are positioned entirely within one of the airflow channels on opposing sides of the corresponding pair of hard drives; and
wherein at least one of the inlet air deflectors and at least one of the outlet air deflectors comprises air deflector surfaces covered by an acoustic attenuating foam, wherein the acoustic attenuating foam has a flat two-dimensional (2-D) surface.
