1. A portable safety control device for use with a removable portable electronic apparatus to communicate with an industrial machine having a control unit, the portable safety control device comprising:
a gripping portion having a longitudinal length and comprising a first side wall, a second side wall opposite to the first side wall, an upper wall that connects the first side wall to the second side wall at upper portions thereof, and a lower wall that connects the first side wall to the second side walls at lower portions thereof, with the first side wall, the second side wall, the upper wall and the lower wall that define a substantially tubular shape of the gripping portion operable to be gripped by a portion of a first human hand;
an enabling switch mounted on the first side wall, at a center region along a longitudinal length of the first side wall, the enabling switch being operable by at least one finger of the first human hand gripping the gripping portion;
an emergency stop switch mounted on the first side wall, at a center region along a longitudinal length of the first side wall, the emergency stop switch being operable by a second human hand;
a control circuitry in electronic signal communication with the enabling switch and the emergency stop switch, the control circuitry being housed within a hollow defined by the substantially tubular shape of the gripping portion;
a first communication interface at the gripping portion in electronic signal communication with the control circuitry, the first communication interface being operable to electronically communicate with the removable portable electronic apparatus;
a second communication interface at the gripping portion in electronic signal communication with the control circuitry, the second communication interface being operable to electronically communicate with the control unit of the industrial machine;
a plate-shaped supporting portion connected to the gripping portion in a fixed position relative thereto, the plate-shaped supporting portion extending laterally from the second side wall of the gripping portion in a cantilever manner and having an exposed top surface defining a resting area for a back of the removable portable electronic apparatus, the plate-shaped supporting portion also having an exposed bottom surface opposite to the top surface and operable to be supported by a forearm connected to the first human hand gripping the gripping portion; and
a constraint device connected to at least one of the gripping portion or the plate-shaped supporting portion, the constraint device being operable to removably secure the removable portable electronic apparatus to the plate-shaped supporting portion with the back thereof resting on the resting area defined by the exposed top surface of the plate-shaped supporting portion;
wherein the resting area defined by the exposed top surface of the plate-shaped supporting portion, the constraint device and the first communication interface are operable for enabling use of the portable safety control device with removable portable electronic apparatuses having different lateral dimensions.
