1. An optical assembly, comprising:
a partial reflector capable of, upon receiving first light having a first circular polarization, transmitting a first portion of the first light; and
a first polarization volume holographic element positioned to reflect the first portion of the first light as second light having the first circular polarization back toward the partial reflector so that the partial reflector reflects a first portion of the second light as third light having a second circular polarization that is distinct from the first circular polarization back toward the first polarization volume holographic element and the first polarization volume holographic element transmits the third light.
