1. A method for installing a gravel pack in a well, comprising:
placing gravel pack material in the well;
lowering an arc discharge tool to a predetermined position within the well, the arc discharge tool configured to generate shock waves that cause compaction of the gravel pack material;
compacting the gravel pack material by generating, with the arc discharge tool, at least one shock wave that propagates into the gravel pack material; and
withdrawing the arc discharge tool from the well.
