1. An aqueous rechargeable zinc Li-ion battery cell, comprising:
a binder-free, dough-like flexible cathode that includes 70 to 95 wt. % reversible Li-ion intercalation/deintercalation active material and 5 to 30 wt. % conductive agent as a solid phase dispersed in a neutral or weakly acidic hybrid aqueous electrolyte that includes an aqueous solution of Zn2+ and Li+ salts, wherein the Li-ion intercalation compound is selected from the group consisting of LiMn2O4, LiFePO4, LiCoO2, LiCoxNiyMnzO2 (x+y+z=1);
a porous and robust sponge zinc anode; and
wherein the cathode is separated from the anode by a separator and an aqueous electrolyte in the separator,
wherein the cathode has a thickness in the range of 700 micrometers to 2000 micrometers.
