1. A refuse vehicle, comprising:
a chassis;
a body coupled to the chassis, the body defining a refuse compartment including a hopper portion and a storage portion, and wherein the body includes a tailgate; and
an electric energy system, the electric energy system comprising control hardware and a plurality of battery cells positioned within a modular housing, the electric energy system detachably coupled to the body and accessible through the tailgate, wherein the tailgate is configured to be opened such that the plurality of battery cells are removable and replaceable through the tailgate, and wherein at least one of the plurality of battery cells extends below a top surface of the chassis, directly below the storage portion of the refuse compartment, and directly alongside a pair of rear tractive elements of the refuse vehicle in a longitudinal direction;
wherein the plurality of battery cells of the electric energy system are configured to provide electrical energy for performing a driving operation of the refuse vehicle, wherein the plurality of battery cells are individually removable from the modular housing and replaceable while the electrical energy is provided.
