1. An auto-injector comprising:
a housing having a sidewall that extends to a closed distal end of the housing;
a syringe retainer defining an opening for a syringe, the syringe retainer configured to move relative to the housing from a distal position to a proximal position such that the syringe moves proximally relative to the housing when the syringe is in the syringe retainer;
a compression spring disposed within the housing such that a distal end of the compression spring is engaged to the closed distal end of the housing, the auto-injector configured such that when the compression spring is released the syringe retainer moves from the distal position to the proximal position;
a needle shroud configured to move relative to the housing from (i) a first position in which a proximal end of the needle shroud extends from a proximal end of the housing by a first distance to (ii) a second position in which the proximal end of the needle shroud extends from the proximal end of the housing by a second distance that is less than the first distance; and
a second member having (i) a first portion configured to extend into an opening of the sidewall of the housing, and (ii) a second portion that extends outward of the sidewall of the housing when the first portion extends into the opening of the sidewall of the housing,
wherein the auto-injector is configured such that the needle shroud moves from the first position to the second position before the syringe retainer moves from the distal position to the proximal position.
