1. A surgical instrument, comprising:
(a) a shaft defining a lumen and a laterally presented window opening, the lumen and the laterally presented window opening being in communication with each other, the laterally presented window opening being configured to receive a first tissue therein from the environment, the shaft comprising a shaft edge at least partially surrounding the laterally presented window opening;
(b) a cutting member comprising a cutting edge configured to be cyclically moved within the lumen of the shaft adjacent to the shaft edge for cutting a tissue portion of the first tissue for removal therefrom; and
(c) a tissue monitor system associated with at least one of the shaft or the cutting member, the tissue monitoring system being configured to detect a second tissue distinct from the first tissue for selectively cutting and removing the first tissue relative to the second tissue, the tissue monitor system comprising a first tissue sensor configured to detect the second tissue, the first tissue sensor being elongate and extending along a majority of a length of the laterally presented window opening.
