1. A network device operable with a peer network device for multihoming a host, the network device being in an active configuration for the multihoming of the host, the network device comprising:
control circuitry configured to
store an active local path for reaching the host,
receive a backup route message advertised by the peer network device and containing a Media Access Control (MAC) address of the host and an Internet Protocol (IP) address of the host, wherein the received backup route message comprises an Ethernet Virtual Private Network (EVPN) type-2 route, an indicator that the EVPN type-2 route is a backup route, and a Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) label associated with the EVPN type-2 route as the backup route, and
store a backup remote path for reaching the host based on the backup route message advertised by the peer network device; and
a packet processor configured to receive traffic destined for the host and process the received traffic using the backup remote path by encapsulating the traffic with the MPLS label in response to a link failure on the active local path.
