1. A method comprising:
accessing, by a computing system, a preference coefficient of a user, wherein the preference coefficient is associated with an attribute of interest of a plurality of attributes of characters, and wherein the preference coefficient is indicative of the user's interest in the attribute of interest;
determining, by the computing system, a first character rating of a first character of a plurality of characters of a media content based on the preference coefficient and a character preference function for the user;
determining, by the computing system, a media content rating for the media content based on the first character rating, wherein the media content rating for the media content is further based on a first salience value for the first character, and wherein the first salience value for the first character is calculated by a measuring software module, and is based on a number of reactions detected in social media relating to the first character at multiple social networking websites; and
generating, for display on a display device communicatively coupled to the computing system, a display of media content selected from among a plurality of media contents, based on the media content rating, wherein generating the display of the selected media content comprises recommending to the user, based on the media content rating, the selected media content.
