1. A method of identifying hot items in a distributed storage system having a plurality of storage tiers and a plurality of client nodes corresponding to the plurality of storage tiers, the method comprising:
summarizing, by a first client node of the plurality of client nodes corresponding to a first storage tier of the plurality of storage tiers, different data streams of item access of the first storage tier from different periods of time to obtain a plurality of different data summary structures;
merging, by the first client node, the plurality of different data summary structures to obtain a merged data summary structure;
receiving a query that asks for frequently accessed items of the first storage tier in a service store;
executing the query on the merged data summary structure maintained by the first client node; and
returning a result from the executed query that is indicative of the frequently accessed items of the first storage tier in the service store.
