1. A device, comprising:
a processing system including a processor; and
a memory that stores executable instructions that, when executed by the processing system, facilitate performance of operations, the operations comprising:
identifying a communication device communicatively coupled to a serving base station;
requesting a device type associated with the communication device from the serving base station;
determining the communication device comprises an unmanned aerial vehicle based on the device type;
obtaining a geolocation of the communication device based on the communication device comprising the unmanned aerial vehicle;
determining an altitude associated with the communication device based on the geolocation of the communication device;
determining a discontinuous sleep state timer value according to the altitude;
generating a customized radio resource control (RRC) reconfiguration message based on the communication device comprising the unmanned aerial vehicle and the geolocation associated with the communication device, wherein the customized RRC reconfiguration message includes the discontinuous sleep timer value; and
transmitting the customized RRC reconfiguration message to the communication device via the serving base station.
