1. A method comprising:
maintaining first electronic contact data for a plurality of users, each user having an account with an interaction system;
receiving, from a first device of a sender, a selection of a content item, the content item being adapted for presentation by a first application provided by the interaction system, and the sender having a first account with the interaction system;
obtaining a recipient identifier of a recipient of the content item from second electronic contact data associated with a second application of the sender, wherein the recipient identifier is not linked to an account forming part of the first electronic contact data;
causing transmission of an off-platform communication in an electronic format supported by a second device associated with the recipient identifier;
detecting, subsequent to establishment of a second account with the interaction system linked to the recipient identifier, accessing of a messaging user interface of the first application by the recipient; and
in response to the detecting of the accessing of the messaging user interface by the recipient, causing presentation, in the messaging user interface, of:
profile data of the sender and a user-selectable relationship establishment element; and
a message from the sender comprising the content item, thereby enabling the recipient to access the content item via the first application.
