1. A high current field emission cathode comprising:
a substrate;
an electrically resistive layer disposed on the substrate, the electrically resistive layer including a mixture of a nonconductive matrix material and a conductive filler material;
an adhesion promoting layer disposed on the electrically resistive layer; and
an electron emissive layer including a nanomaterial and disposed on the adhesion promoting layer.
