1. A gaming system comprising:
a processor; and
a memory device that stores a plurality of instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:
for a play of a game associated with a symbol accumulation sequence comprising at least two plays of the game:
cause a display, by a display device, of a plurality of symbols at a plurality of symbol display positions, and
for each of the plurality of symbol display positions, responsive to the symbol displayed at that symbol display position being a designated symbol and less than a predefined quantity of designated symbols being previously accumulated in association with that symbol display position, accumulate the displayed designated symbol at that symbol display position, and
responsive to any accumulated designated symbols forming a predefined pattern of accumulated designated symbols, activate a feature associated with the predefined pattern of accumulated designated symbols, wherein the predefined pattern is associated with the symbol display positions associated with at least two, but less than each, of a plurality of reels, different predefined patterns of accumulated designated symbols are associated with different features, and an accumulation of the designated symbol at one of the symbol display positions for a first play of the game of the symbol accumulation sequence modifies a probability of activating the feature associated with the predefined pattern of accumulated designated symbols for a second play of the game of the symbol accumulation sequence.
