1. An electronic device comprising:
a memory having a display configuration module stored thereon;
a communication subsystem that comprises an interface by which the electronic device communicatively connects to one or more external display devices;
a processor communicatively coupled to the memory and communication subsystem, and which executes program code of the display configuration module, wherein the processor is configured to cause the electronic device to:
connect, via the interface, to an external display;
determine a display size for the external display;
determines a usage mode for the external display;
determine a display category for the external display, based at least in part, on the display size and the usage mode;
configure, based on the display category, content presented for consumption via the external display, wherein to configure the content, the processor causes the electronic device to dynamically configure the content presented for consumption via the external display, based, at least in part on the usage mode, wherein at least one display characteristic of the content can be modified for optimal presentation on the external display;
in response to the usage mode being a video usage mode, present fewer graphical elements rendered larger within an allocated subregion for presenting the content; and
in response to the usage mode being an applications usage mode, present a larger number of graphical elements rendered smaller within the allocated subregion relative to the presentation in video usage mode.
